Culinary capers; Year 7 and 8 delve into delicious dishes!

Year 7 and 8 have been enjoying two periods on a Friday in the food tech room with Mrs Bichan. Not only have they been learning new skills and lingo, they have been enjoying the end result of taste testing!

Embarking on their food technology unit, Room 16 has entered a realm of culinary exploration. Our initial focus centred on instilling a comprehensive understanding of kitchen safety regulations. This ensures that they’re ready with essential skills to create a safe and enjoyable cooking environment.

Equipped with this foundational knowledge of safety, the students eagerly delved into mastering knife skills, ensuring their competence in slicing, dicing and mincing vegetables. In addition to this, the students explored the diverse functions of kitchen utensils and technical terms, such as preheat, whisk, sauté, knead, julienne, grate, and blend.

The application of this newfound knowledge came to life as the students undertook crafting their own pizza bases and sauces from scratch. With a flurry of finely chopped toppings, the classroom buzzed with creativity as the students assembled their delectable pizzas.

Next week’s endeavours will involve using precise measurements, with kitchen scales, measuring cups, and spoons to make banana chocolate chip muffins. The aroma will fill the air and the baking will fill some stomachs!
