The Catlins Area School is strongly committed to the use of technology to enhance teaching and learning opportunities for students. That commitment has been illustrated in many ways over the years, including through becoming one of the founding members of the OtagoNET organisation for Video Conference based eLearning in 2002.
Through this form of eLearning students at The Catlins Area School are able to access a wide range additional subjects for Face2Face learning - in Virtual Classrooms that allow students to speak with and see their teachers in 'real time' - despite being in different towns. This technology allows classes to form globally, and has been used on various occassions for students of The Catlins Area School to speak with experts about topics of study, or to take part in significant events.
In recent years students of The Catlins Area School have even been able to meet with the New Zealand All Blacks on various occassions before key matches through the use of this technology.
Broadening Your Horizens
In 2008 The Catlins Area School opened an exciting new initiative as New Zealand's first provider of Aviation Studies through eLearning. Students throughout not only Otago, but also the rest of New Zealand, have enrolled the programme - attending The Catlins Area School classes from locations as diverse as Mount Aspiring College in Wanaka, to Aotea College in Porirua.
